Q. What is a Domain Name and why do I need one?

A. The Domain Name System (DNS) helps users to find their way around the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address -just like a telephone number- which is a rather complicated string of numbers. It is called its IP address. But it is hard to remember everyone's IP address. The DNS makes it easier by allowing a familiar string of letters (the "domain name") to be used instead of the arcane IP address. So instead of typing 66.201.69.107, you can type www.softwareprojects.com. It is a "mnemonic" device that makes addresses easier to remember.

Translating the name into the IP address is called "resolving the domain name." The goal of the DNS is for any Internet user any place in the world to reach a specific Web site IP address by entering its domain name. Domain names are also used for reaching e-mail addresses and for other Internet applications. The DNS is a static, hierarchical name service that uses TCP/IP hosts and is housed on a number of servers on the Internet .

When your account is set up, information about your domain name is added to our name servers. The information is then sent from us through the central Registry for your domain to be used by the other nameservers on the Internet. This makes it possible for people to find and access your server on the Internet. It usually takes about 48 hours before nameservers on other networks will be able to access the information after the Registry for your domain gets it. This 48 hour period is referred to as propagation.

Q. If you host my Domain name, do you also host my web site?

A. Not necessarily. We do not host websites that you create elsewhere. Web Site hosting and Domain Name hosting are two different things.

Your domain has to be hosted on a nameserver so that when someone types your domain name into a browser, it goes there first to look up information about the domain. From there, the domain name "points" to your web site, which is usually hosted on another server.

Q. I need to forward (point) my domain name to my website. How do I setup URL forwarding?

A. Once your domain is registered on our servers, you can use the built-in web-based administration panel to easily setup URL forwarding, so that anyone typing your domain into a browser, will get to your website.

Q. How long does it take to get set up?

A. From the time we receive your order, it may take up to 48 hours for your domain registration to propagate across the Internet. However, once active, unlike other platforms, with our solution - whenever you make changes to your domain records, they update instantly within 4 seconds across the entire Internet.

This is a huge benefit and means that if you ever need to switch the IP Address pointed to by your domain or modify the contact-information, your changes will propagate instantly and you will not have to wait 48 hours.

Q. After a domain is deleted, how long does it take until it becomes available for registration?

A. While there are no guaranteed periods, it normally takes up to 29 days for a domain to become available again.

Q. What do I have to do if I would later like to transfer my domain names away from SoftwareProjects.com?

A. To transfer your domain names to a different registrar, contact your new domain registration provider and ask them to initiate a 'Domain Transfer Request'.

Your new registrar needs to initiate a domain transfer request to move your domain names to their servers. This process ensures that at any given point in time, your domain name has a "home" and is properly registered.
