How to: Transfer webhosting OUT of SoftwareProjects

Mike Peters, 05-03-2007
We're sorry to hear you would like to move your web hosting to a different hosting provider. SoftwareProjects has partnered with best of breed hosting companies to deliver unique features (built-in load balancing, dual servers with each account, triple daily backups) at unbeatable prices.

If there's anything we can change or improve to keep your business, please contact your SoftwareProjects account manager or contact our support personnel at support@softwareprojects.com and let us know. We're known to go above and beyond to make our customers happy.

If you feel you've exhausted all options and would still like to move your web hosting to a different company, this guide will help explain what you need to do:

Step 1: Pick a new hosting provider.
You need to pick a new "home" for your website. Your website pages and images need to be stored on a server with an IP address that is publicly available, for prospects and customers to be able to reach your website.

We recommend: GoDaddy, Network Solutions and Register.com

Step 2: Create a zip (or tar) compressed file containing all files and images of your website. You can either do this on your own by using SoftwareProjects web based FTP or a standalone FTP program. Alternatively, you could purchase a 1 hour block from SoftwareProjects and let us handle the entire transfer process for you, setting up everything with your new hosting provider.

If you're having SoftwareProjects handle the transfer for you - you don't have to do anything else. Continue reading if you've decided to do this on your own:

Step 3: Use an FTP program to connect to your hosting account with your new hosting provider.

Step 4: Extract the zip (or tar) compressed file that was created on step 2, into a temporary folder on your machine.

Step 5: Upload all the files from the folder where you extracted the compressed file, to your new hosting account.

Step 6: Try connecting to your site from the browser, using the IP address or temporary URL that was provided to you by your new hosting company.

If all goes well, your website would show up. If you run into any problems, contact your new web hosting company and ask them for assistance.

Note: Although not mandatory, you might also want to transfer the domain-name that is associated with your website. If you wish to do so, please refer to our guide about how to transfer a domain name
