Find out hostnames for an IP
As you probably know, there is a major difference between a shared server and a dedicated server. With a dedicated server, the only web sites that will be hosted on it are ones that you add. However, with a shared server, you are "sharing" the server space with other people's web site.
The problem with using a shared server is that it can put your web site in a bad neighborhood if you are not careful. Although a dedicated server is usually the best option, small or experimental web sites that will generate minimal traffic and revenue may be best suited for a shared server. However, before you put your web site on a shared server, it is important to see what other web sites are on that server.
When you are shopping around, you can find out the IP address of the server that your web site would be hosted on, and then use the IP Hostname Lookup tool to find and examine the other web sites that will be on your server. This will help you decide whether the server is trustworthy or if you should keep looking for a different provider.
This tool can also be used before purchasing a dedicated server to ensure that you really are the only person on that specific server.
It is also useful to identify all websites owned by your competition. In many cases, they will host several domains on the same machine.
