We've updated SPI login page... and why you should tooDawn Rossi, February 12, 2009 |
The SPI login page was updated today, going from a simple "type your email and password", to a full page showing recent announcements, system status, staff photos and different ways you can connect with us.
Why did we update our login page?
Because this is where you -- our users, kept coming back to.
If you run a community, forum, web service or any type of website that requires your users to login, consider the following:
* Your login page is probably one of the most popular pages of your website.
* Users are bookmarking the login page and going there directly, bypassing your homepage altogether.
* Your login page is the first place users look for information about any ongoing maintenance or issues they may be facing.
The old look & feel
Our old login page, was "just like any other login page". Clean, simple, only serving the single purpose for which it was created - allowing users to login to their SPI account.

Design Goals
Since the numbers were telling us, how popular the login page is, we wanted to accomplish the following design goals:
1. Clearly display recent SPI announcements and updates on the login page
2. Make it very easy to contact us directly from the login page
3. Better connect with users via the login page, inviting users to friend-us on the various social networks we are part of.
4. Display a real time status of all services.
The End Result

You can check it out here.

Tabs, Templates & the Executive DashboardAdrian Singer, January 19, 2009 |
Every time you login to your SoftwareProjects account, you are immediately presented with an executive dashboard, showing charts and quick stats about your online business.

Each service you add to your account, is represented on the executive dashboard by a small box, showing quick stats and providing easy one-click access to drill-down and manage the service.
For example, when you add the Customer Manager service, you will see a box showing new customer trends, total active customers, number of new customers today and yesterday, all neatly displayed on your dashboard.

Almost all of our services come with a 30 day trial period, so feel free to play around, add new services and let us help.
Page Tabs
Tabs let you re-arrange the service boxes displayed on your executive dashboard by category.
For example you can have one tab named "My eBay Business" and another tab named "My Website". Or one tab for "Sales", one for "Customer Support" and one for "Marketing".
By grouping services under separate tabs, you can still enjoy a quick birds-eye view of your business, without getting the dashboard too cluttered.
To create a new tab, click the '+' icon at the top navigation bar. You can drag & drop service boxes into tabs and you can re-arrange the order of tabs by clicking on a tab button and sliding it around.

To rename a tab, click on it once, wait a second and click again. An in-place edit box will show up allowing you to rename the tab.
-
Another way to spice up your dashboard pages, is by picking a different page layout for each page.
Templates
Why settle for the same boring look & feel? Templates allow you to keep things interesting, by applying a unique look & feel to individual pages.
We assign templates on a page level. This means you can apply different templates to different pages, making it easier to tell what category / department you are working on.
To select a new template for your executive dashboard pages, scroll down and click on the 'Page Template' link.

Only 2 templates to choose from right now. We'll be adding many more over the next few weeks.

How to Edit Order DetailsAdrian Singer, January 14, 2009 |
The Edit Order Details screen in SPI's shopping cart, allows you to:
* Update customer shipping address
* Update payment details
* Cancel / Uncancel an order
* Set a custom price
* Charge customer's credit card
* Set an order as free
* Control a recurring product next-charge-date
The really cool thing is that you can do all that from within a single screen. Here's how it works:
Step 1: Access Customer Manager
Login to your SPI account account and click on the Customer Manager. Search for the customer whose order you wish to edit and click on the customer name.
Don't have an SPI account yet? Signup here
Step 2: Select Order to edit
Scroll down and click on the order you wish to edit, under the orders tab.

Step 3: Edit Order details
Update the customer's shipping address, product ordered or set a custom price for this individual order.
If you'd like to provide the customer a free week or two on a recurring product order, update the next-charge-date with a future date.

Step 4: Update Payment Information
Click on Payment Method to switch between 'Credit Card', 'PayPal' or 'Direct Payment'.
If the customer is paying with a credit card, you can select to use an existing card on file or manually enter a new card if you're taking an order over the phone.

Step 5: Process a charge
The 'Process Charge' button lets you charge the selected credit card for a specific amount.

By default the amount shown will be the amount currently due for this order, however you can change that and charge a different amount, thereby giving your customer a discount or charging a premium on the current amount due.
