So far, I've been happy with the few $ that Google Adsense throws my way. At least it pays for the hosting for the project's web site. And since it's just a hobby, I'm quite happy everything almost balances when it comes to expense/income. (Extra question: how do I optimize this ? Not the usual SEO/keyword-speech, please)

However, recently I've been approached by a number of online advertising companies (some of them I've never heard of), asking for advertising space on my site - either as textlinks and/or banners or "boxes" similar to Google Adsense.

The main question is: What's a fair rate when it comes to selling space on the site ?
Obviously it depends on the number of visitors, visibility in search-engines and a lot of other factors (I guess)...
...but is there some kind of general path to follow, checklists to follow and - of course - things to avoid ?
