Case Study: One Hundred Thousand Hits in Only Four DaysTyler Banfield, 05-10-2007 |
As we all know, traffic will make or break a web site. No matter how good your content or design is, if your web site is not receiving any traffic, there is no way for it to be profitable. In order to start attracting a significant amount of traffic, you need to find a way to separate yourself from the crowd of your competitors.
If you think that attracting 100,000 hits in four days is impossible, then you need to change the way you think. A member of Digital Point did just that with his newest web site. He initially attracted nine thousand unique visitors in approximately one day, and after only four days, had experienced one hundred thousand hits.
So how much money did he spend to promote his web site? The answer is zero. He simply sent out a few press releases through free press release services. The real reason for his success is that he came up with a creative, original idea. Because he had taken the time to create something that actually caught people’s attention, links to his web site quickly popped up on places like Fark and many popular forums.
Even though copying his idea would not help you sell more of your own products or services, analyzing his success can help you realize that it takes a little out of the box thinking to appeal to the masses of the internet. No matter how boring you think what you offer is (ex. industrial machinery parts, fountain pen refills), there is always a creative angle that you can take to help your web site achieve viral success.

Very interesting find Tyler!
What I took away from this post was the list of free press release sites:
http://www.1888pressrelease.com
http://www.free-news-release.com
http://www.prleap.com
http://www.pr9.net
http://www.ecommwire.com
http://www.pressexposure.com
http://www.prbuzz.com
http://www.przoom.com
http://www.press-base.com
We have been using mainly http://www.prweb.com when writing and submitting press releases for clients. Will definitely check out these sites and report back.

This is Viral marketing at its best
While I don't have access to his webstats, judging from the page on StumbleUpon, it looks like the press releases got to one user on StumbleUpon with lots of friends, he gave the page the thumbs up and that generated all the StumbleUpon traffic.
Just goes to show that with an ounce of creativity, getting your message in front of a small group of people, will generate dramatic results.
Too bad the original poster didn't monetize on all this traffic. AdSense, AuctionAds, Kontera/IntelliTXT and YPN are just some of the easy things he could have done to better convert traffic to cash.
