Digg 101

Tyler Banfield, 03-06-2007
If you are active within the search engine optimization community, you have probably heard a lot about Digg. Although there is always a discussion about Digg going on, there are still many misconceptions and incorrect information about Digg floating around throughout the internet. Here are some of the most common questions about Digg, along with their correct answers:

What is Digg?
Digg is a "user driven social content web site." Digg allows its users to submit, vote, and comment on stories. The more votes that a story gets, the higher it will be placed on the web site. Digg also allows its users to moderate spam by giving them power to bury comments or stories that contain spam.

Who Uses Digg?
Obviously, with a community of nearly nine hundred thousand, there are all kinds of people that use Digg. However, the primary demographic of Digg is tech savvy, young males. Because of this, popular topics on Digg include Apple, anti-Microsoft, Firefox and of course, Digg itself.

How can Digg help my web site?
The biggest benefit of Digg is the large amount of backlinks it can provide. If you write an article that become popular on Digg, it can easily receive hundreds (if not thousands) of backlinks from web sites all over the internet. Obviously, receiving this many backlinks can greatly improve your positions in the SERPs.

The biggest misconception about Digg is that getting to the top will greatly increase your web site’s revenues. Although Digg can send huge amounts of traffic (an average Digg will send ten to forty thousand visitors), Digg traffic DOES NOT convert to sales. Although it can help with branding, your Digg visitors will not spend their time clicking your ads or purchasing your products. However, as ProBlogger points out, it is possible to gain RSS subscribers and other benefits by creating a Digg Culture on your blog.

Do Diggers Actually Hate SEOs?
Yes, in general, the Digg community is not very fond of the SEO community. Although this may seem unfair, the Digg community is not entirely unjustified. The Digg community dislikes SEOs because they think that every SEO tries to game and spam Digg. Much like car salesmen or lawyers, a few unscrupulous individuals have given the entire SEO community a tainted reputation.

How do I get one of my stories to the top of Digg?
Dirty tactics and spamming aside, anyone can get a story to the top of Digg by taking the time to create an exciting and unique piece of linkbait.

yea super advice, chief. You can have the biggest piece of linkbait, and nobody would even see your submission if you are a Digg newbie. In fact, you need to be well networked in Digg for it to work.

Don't say that out loud, hoarding info is what most of you specialise in anyway!

The real 101 is about friending and gaining some power. Or the best linkbait is garbage.
