Email Marketing Campaign Setup

Mike Peters, 11-08-2007
We love blowing clients away with ROI on Email Marketing campaigns.

Sure, PPC and Media buys are great ways to generate traffic very quickly. But nothing beats the return on Email campaigns.

Steps to take before launching your first email broadcast:

1. Buy an Email list

Good double opt-in qualified lists range $0.05 to $0.30 per record. Make sure every record contains Name, Email, Timestamp, Source, IP and Physical Address.

Find out how fresh the list is, when was the last time it was used and what are typical delivery/open rates you can expect.

2. Prepare an Email Landing page

Similar to PPC landing pages, Email landing pages are where your prospect lands once they click the link inside the email message.

Email landing pages are different in design than PPC landing pages. You cannot use the same page for both channels.

3. Write a series of Email Messages

Use a copywriter who is experienced with writing Email messages. Like PPC ad creatives, there is an art to writing email messages that work.

4. Register a new domain

You need a unique domain that will be used as the mailing domain for your campaign. Never use direct links to your main website as part of the email message.

5. Setup Forward and Reverse DNS for your mailing domain

Forward DNS Lookup: Takes a domain name, like softwareprojects.com, and returns an IP address, such as 204.200.197.195.

Reverse DNS Lookup: Takes an IP address, like 204.200.197.195, and returns a domain name, such as softwareprojects.com.

Failure to setup Forward and Reverse DNS for the new domain is going to diminish your email delivery rates.

6. Load, Test and Launch

Load the email list and message series into your Email Marketing system.

Send the mailing to yourself, test all the links work, test replying to the message and test the unsubscribe link.

If everything looks good - launch the campaign and monitor the results.
