The Truth About EDU BacklinksTyler Banfield, 05-24-2007 |
It seems like webmasters are always after links from .EDU web sites. Over time, webmasters have slowly distorted the reasons why an EDU backlink can be valuable. Ironically enough, many webmasters pay top dollar for these links because they are under the impression that Google gives special preference to any web site that has .EDU in their domain name. Unfortunately for them, Matt Cutts dispelled this rumor almost a year ago. Even though Google doesn’t give them special preference, there are still reasons why links from .EDU web sites can be a good investment.
The most important aspect of .EDU domains is that they have a lot of authority. Not only have most of them been around for a long-time, but they have hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of backlinks. On top of that, a large percentage of these backlinks come from other sources which have gained a lot of trust from Google. Because of this trust, EDU pages do tend to rank well in Google (hence the reason so many have been hijacked by Viagra spammers).

Additionally, the search engines are constantly crawling these sites because of the large amount of new content that is added to them on a regular basis. Therefore, if you have a web site that is not yet indexed, getting a link from an EDU web site will normally result in your web site being indexed fairly quickly.
When you are purchasing links for a web site, you can definitely consider links from .EDU web sites. However, be reasonable about how much you pay for these links, because it will take more than a few .EDU backlinks to rank at the top of the SERPs for any competitive keywords.

Excellent post Tyler! I do agree that links from .edu sites are golden, not because of the TLD (.edu) but simply because of the high TrustRank these sites often hold.
Here's a trick we use to acquire .edu links for our clients -
Find an .edu site in your niche, that belongs to an academy or university. Locate the web administrator. Introduce yourself, explain the relevancy and offer to sponsor their research. Don't mention the link request at this stage.
Wait until you hear back. You may get redirected to the real 'decision maker' this time by the Webmaster (who's often just the gate keeper). If that's the case introduce yourself again and explain your company believes in this research and although you don't have a huge budget, your company would like to sponsor the site.
You'll often get an enthusiastic response and you'd be able to get away with a low 3 digit number. Explain you want nothing in return but a link to your website in honor of the donation would be very much appreciated and helpful for tax purposes.
Works every time.
